Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, has gained popularity in recent years as a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure to rejuvenate the skin, reduce the appearance of acne scars, skin texture, wrinkles and pigmentation spots. If you’re considering microneedling to improve the appearance of your skin, here’s everything you need to know about this procedure:
How does microneedling work?
During a microneedling treatment, the InnoPen microneedling device with tiny needles creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These micro-injuries trigger the skin’s natural healing response, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential proteins for maintaining skin firmness and elasticity. Additionally, the microchannels created during microneedling allow for better penetration of topical serums and skincare products, enhancing their effectiveness.
What skin concerns can microneedling help with?
Microneedling is a versatile and effective skincare treatment that addresses a multitude of skin concerns.
- Reduces fine lines and wrinkles: Stimulates collagen production to improve skin elasticity and reduce signs of aging.
- Improves scars: Effectively treats various types of scarring including acne scars and surgical scars by promoting skin regeneration.
- Minimizes pore size: Helps in reducing the appearance of enlarged pores by promoting collagen production around the pores.
- Treats hyperpigmentation: Aids in the reduction of dark spots, sun spots, and other forms of discoloration by accelerating skin cell turnover.
- Evens skin tone: Enhances overall skin tone and texture, leading to smoother and more uniform skin.
- Reduces stretch marks: Can decrease the visibility of stretch marks through skin rejuvenation and increased elasticity.
- Enhances product absorption: Improves the efficacy of topical skincare products by increasing their penetration into the deeper layers of the skin.
How can microneedling reduce the appearance of stretch marks and scars on the body?
Microneedling is a powerful treatment for improving the appearance of body scars and stretch marks, leveraging the body’s natural healing mechanisms to rejuvenate and repair the skin. Here’s how it works:
- Stimulates collagen production. The new collagen that forms helps to fill in and smooth out scars and stretch marks, making them less noticeable.
- Breaks down scar tissue. For scar reduction, the process of microneedling can break down old, tough scar tissue and stimulate the generation of healthier skin cells. This can result in scars becoming softer, flatter, and less prominent.
- Improves skin texture and tone. By encouraging the turnover of skin cells, microneedling can enhance both the texture and the tone of the skin.
- Enhances product absorption. Post-treatment, the skin becomes more receptive to topical treatments, meaning that products designed to further improve scars and stretch marks can be more effective. The channels created by microneedling allow these products to penetrate deeper into the skin and act more directly on the targeted areas.
- Minimal downtime. Unlike some other treatments for scars and stretch marks, microneedling requires minimal downtime. Most people experience only minor redness and irritation for a few days after the procedure, making it a convenient option for those with busy lifestyles.
What are the possible side effects after microneedling?
Microneedling is generally a safe and effective treatment, but like any cosmetic procedure, it can have some side effects.
- Skin redness and irritation
- Swelling
- Dryness and flaking
- Bruising
- Sensitivity to sunlight
- Minor bleeding
- Infection (rare)
